Microsoft Teases Multiple Gaming Devices And Next-Gen Xbox As It Doubles Down On Windows

What is an Xbox? The answer to that has never been more confusing, but a new promo video from Microsoft teasing the future of its next-gen gaming hardware lineup gives an important clue: Windows. The company said it wants the OS to be the number one platform for gaming as it doubles down on a new multiplatform strategy that supports a variety of devices rather than being locked to a single console or storefront.

“I am thrilled to share we’ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices including our next-generation Xbox consoles, in your living room and in your hands,” Xbox president Sarah Bond said in a new video touting the partnership. “Together with AMD we’re advancing the state of art in gaming silicon to deliver the next generation of graphics innovation to unlock a deeper level of visual quality and immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI, all while maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games.”

The announcement comes after Microsoft recently revealed the Xbox Ally handhelds, variants of Asus’ next iteration of portable PC gaming devices that run a special version of Windows optimized to recreate the Xbox UI experience on the go. It’s part of a “Play Anywhere” promise that includes PC, existing Series X/S consoles, Game Pass on TVs, cloud gaming, and first-party exclusives ported to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It all sounds like a promising pivot away from the company’s shrinking console business, but it also raises lots of questions about what the future of Xbox will actually look like.

  (Image credit: Studio Camelia) After  raising nearly $340,000 on Kickstarter  in a crowdfunding campaign that ended in June 2024, Studio Camelia, the developer of "a vibrant tribute to the golden age of JPRGs" called Alzara Radiant Echoes, has announced that it's shutting down. In a  Kickstarter update  (via  Game Developer ), Studio Camelia said that despite the success of the crowdfunding campaign, it's been unable to secure further financing and thus cannot continue development. "We started the studio with our personal savings and managed to convince business angels, banks, and institutions who believed in our vision and supported us," the dev team wrote. "We were even honored to be accepted into Microsoft’s Developer Acceleration Program.

Stellar Blade sold a million units in 3 days on PC and you can mostly thank Chinese players

If not, you may be some kind of statistical outlier, as  Shift Up recently came out and announced  that the game had sold over 1 million copies on PC in its first three days alone. Which isn't bad. I've never done a million of anything, let alone in three days, so a tip of the hat to the team on that one. No wonder the game crept into  Steam's top 100 all-time most-played by concurrent players  last weekend. It took the 81st spot on Sunday with 192,078 players online at once. Across all platforms, Stellar Blade has sold 3 million copies across its lifetime. So hey, not bad going for us—we make up fully ⅓ of the game's sales after just a few days of availability. Don't underestimate PC gamers: we are pathologically unable to not spend money on things.

Borderlands 4 system requirements demand 8 CPU cores and 8 GB of VRAM but the reality is probably a bit more forgiving than that

  (Image credit: Gearbox) After all the is-it-isn't-it $80 dollars drama ( turns out it's $70 base price , which still isn't exactly cheap), the next  Borderlands 4 -related financial crisis has hoved into view. Just how much cash will you need invested in your rig to play the thing in all its cell-shaded glory? Well, now we know thanks to the official minimum specifications being posted on  Borderlands 4's Steam page . Up front and centre, several minimum requirements stand out. You're going to need at least eight CPU cores, 8 GB of VRAM, and Nvidia RTX 2070 or AMD 5700 XT, 16 GB of RAM and finally an SDD rather than an HDD. Before you panic, despite these being listed as "minimum" requirements it's unlikely they are all actually required to run the game. By way of example, if these specs are to be believed, a brand new  AMD Ryzen 5 9600X CPU  isn't good enough. That's a very good budget gaming chip and it's highly implausible that it'...
